For 35 years Doña Flor has worked as a clerk in a government office, her life cloaked in order and routine. One morning she awakens to find her cat has died. Refusing to accept the loss of her sole companion, Doña Flor tries to continue life as usual, but the loss triggers memories of the drowning of her own child. Doña Flor returns to the water to save herself from drowning in sorrow.
