Washington DC detective Dr. Alex Cross (Freeman) travels to North Carolina to investigate the apparent kidnapping of his niece. Aided by escaped kidnapee Kate McTiernan (Judd), Cross hunts down the kidnapper, who operates under the pseudonym "Casanova".
