They are films that take place during the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua. The Sandinista Revolution was a period of conflict of several phases (from 1978 to 1990) in which the FSLN (Sandinista National Liberation Front) participated and had the main objective of overthrowing the long dictatorship of the Somoza family (1978-1979), the subsequent FSLN effort to govern Nicaragua, and the “La Contra” War (1981 to 1990), which was fought between the Nicaraguan government led by the FSLN and the Contra (Counterrevolution).
Tens of thousands of Nicaraguans died in the conflict. Both the FSLN and the Contra received large amounts of aid from the Cold War superpowers (the Soviet Union and the United States). Peace was achieved thanks to the Tela Agreement (in Honduras) and the subsequent demobilization of the FSLN and Contra armies. In 1990, general elections were held, the winners being the anti-Sandinista parties, led by journalist Violeta Chamorro (becoming the first female president of the American continent), so the FSLN had to hand over power, ending the revolutionary period in the Central American country.
