The 73th edition of the Academy Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was held on March 25, 2001 at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Center in Los Angeles, United States, awarding the best films of the year 2000. The ceremony was presented by Steve Martin.
The movie with the most nominations at the Academy Awards 2001 was Gladiator with 12 nominations and The film that won the most awards was Gladiator, winning 5 of the 12 nominations.
At the 2001 Oscar ceremony, the film "Gladiator" was established as the winner in the best film category. This triumph made it the second film in the peplum genre (films set in classical antiquity) to obtain this award, the first being Ben-Hur in 1959.
Steven Soderbergh achieved an unprecedented feat: two nominations for best director in the same edition, for the films "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic." Although he didn't win for the first one, he did take the statuette for "Traffic."
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" also made history by being the third film to simultaneously receive nominations for best film and best foreign film. In addition, it accumulated a total of ten nominations, becoming the non-English language film with the most nominations in Oscar history. With four awards won, it became the most awarded non-English language film, equaling the record of "Fanny and Alexander" (Sweden, 1983).
It should be noted that River Phoenix and Joaquin Phoenix became the first brother duo to be nominated for best supporting actor. River received the nomination for "Running on Empty" in 1988, while Joaquin obtained it for "Gladiador" in this edition.
The ceremony lasted 3 hours and 23 minutes and awarded the best films of 2000 in 23 categories.
